Kids to pilot 'green' learning
Alpine children are about to make their Victorian rural counterparts 'green' with envy.
They will be part of a partnership agreement aimed at producing a viable model for early childhood services to gain Sustainability Certification in line with other sectors.
Alpine Children's Services (APS) have been accepted as part of a pilot program for creating a sustainability index for early childhood sector, and will partner with Knox City and Port Phillip City councils in this venture that has all involved excited about the learning outcomes.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, last week announced a $250,000 grant with Sustainability Victoria for the initiative, which will be implemented over the next two to three years.
Alpine Children Services director of marketing and programs, Susan Anehagen, said the news the Alpine region would be part of such an extensive and wide-ranging program, the first of its kind aimed at young children's development in terms of engaging and appreciating the environment, was very pleasing.
Alpine Children Services manager Jenny Kromar said the learning involved would be a whole new experience for children in their formative years of education and provide critical knowledge.
"It integrates educational, environmental, social and economic outcomes so that schools do not see each area in isolation but as components of the bigger picture of sustainability," Ms Kromar said.
Next month Ms Anehagen and Ms Kromar will travel to Melbourne to work out a plan to deliver outcomes around sustainability in early childhood.

15 hours of preschool by 2013..
Did you know?
The government is committed to increasing early childhood education up to 15hours for children for the year before they go to school by 2013.
The preschool program is to be delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher, in accordance with a national early years learning framework, for 15 hours a week, 40 weeks a year.
The program will be accessible across a diversity of settings, in a form that meets the needs of parents and in a manner that ensures cost does not present a barrier to access.
At the moment
Currently the number of hours of preschool education to children prior to full time schooling in the Alpine Shire varies, however it sits between 10.75 hours to 12 hours per week, 40 weeks per year. In accordance with the governments planning process Capacity Assessment Reports for 2011 are being undertaken to determine the potential changes that are required for our services to implement universal access.
